GoZ Promises US$20 to Urban Households

The Zimbabwean government has announced a plan to give $20 to families in cities who are struggling to get enough food.

This is happening because a recent report found that 1.7 million people in cities need help due to drought.

The Minister of Social Welfare, July Moyo, said that vulnerable families will get either $13 or $20, depending on their needs.

We are organising the selection process so that we start immediately and we assist our people who are vulnerable and who need this livelihood to sustain themself.

The government will work with local authorities and other departments to make sure the selection process is fair and help reaches those who need it most.

The minister said that the government is confident that there is enough food available in shops and markets for people to buy.

Last year, they allowed companies to import food, and they have enough wheat and other supplies. If shops run out, the government has a backup plan with a strategic grain reserve.

Last year we allowed the importation of food by the private sector. They have enough wheat or through contract farming. That’s why we are giving cash.

We are in a multi-currency that’s why we quoted in the US but we are most likely going to give them ZiG cash.

The government has also approved a $2 billion humanitarian appeal to help with food, water, energy, and other issues affected by the drought. This includes support from the United Nations and other organizations.

The cash transfers will start soon, after a screening exercise to identify the families who need help most. The government has already helped 6.1 million people in rural areas with food assistance.

When ZIMLAC for rural areas came out, we did a quick screening exercise where each one of the over 35 000 village heads convened meetings to screen and see what families needed. Now we are in a position where 6.1 million people in rural areas are being given food.
