Father Fatally Assaults Daughter over Mjolo
A father in Nyanga was taken into custody last Friday, accused of fatally assaulting his 14-year-old daughter, Rufaro Nyamangodo, after suspecting her of having an affair with a neighbour.
Amos Rutendo Nyamangondo allegedly used a mulberry tree switch to beat his daughter all over her body, resulting in her death a few days later.
The incident occurred on December 23, 2023, at Mangwanda Village, Mutasa, Honde Valley.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest and shared additional details. He stated,
“Police in Nyanga have arrested Amos Rutendo Nyamangodo in connection with a case of murder in which his daughter, Rufaro Nyamangodo aged 14, died on December 29, 2023, after allegedly being hit with a mulberry tree switch all over the body on 23 December 2023, at Mangwanda Village, Mutasa, Honde Valley. The suspect had allegedly accused the victim of having an affair with a neighbour.”
Unfortunately, cases of parents beating and killing their children are not uncommon in Zimbabwe, with many believing that corporal punishment is the best way to discipline their offspring.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) National Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, providing additional details about the unfortunate event.
On December 30, 2023, Devine Musandipa, 8, was sitting on the edge of a 2-meter-deep swimming pool when the pool’s edge collapsed, causing him to fall in. In a heroic attempt to rescue his son, 43-year-old Sifiso Bhebhe tragically drowned in the same pool.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi shared the details, stating:
“The ZRP reports a sad incident which occurred on December 30, 2023, in a bushy area near Sunrise Township, Sanyati, Kadoma in which Devine Musandipa aged eight drowned in a pool, approximately two metres deep, after the edge of the pool he was sitting on collapsed.
The victim had been fetching firewood with his sister aged 12, when they came across the pool. The victim’s father, Sifiso Bhebhe aged 43 drowned in the same pool whilst trying to rescue his son.”
