Charamba Speaks on Viral Chivayo Saga

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba has spoken on the viral Wicknell Chivayo saga.

Since Monday, tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo has been on everyone’s lips. An audio leaked in which he pompously declared that the President and the system were in his pocket. He claimed that he now has a father-son relationship with ED.

Leaked Audio Exposes Chivayo’s Shady Deals

Chivayo claimed he is now 20 times richer since August 2023, owing to the US$40 million Zimbabwe Electoral Commision tender.

Another audio leaked yesterday, in which Chivayo said they had received a US$1 million payment.

According to revelations in the second leaked audio, Scott was going to get US$350 000; himself US$150 000; Moses Mpofu US$150 000; Mike Chimombe US$150 000; Moms vaya (ZEC chairperson Priscilla Chigumba) US$100 000, and DG (the state security agency, Central Intelligence Organisation ‘CIO’ Director-General Issac Moyo) US$100 000.

Charamba, added his opinion to the drama. He accused Wicknell of namedropping:

  • WhatsApp masterclass

“WHAT INSANITY: You have business partners who dribble one another. In the ensuing fallout, one of them allegedly name-drops in order to scare away the rest. I am supposed to be exercised by such a bald form of self-defense through name-dropping on the part of a party to the dispute?

Charamba Speaks on Viral Chivayo Saga

“The offensive name-dropping automatically indicts the President and Government? Claims don’t become true because they have been made. Or because some detractors of His Excellency the President, Dr ED Mnangagwa, in chorus form, wish them to be so.”

Commenting on the Starlink deal which is also mired in controversy, Charamba painstakingly tried to absolve his boss ED of any wrongdoing. He said:

“As for Starlink, aaaah, nothing couldn’t be more absurd. Starlink is not a govt parastatal. Who it goes into partnership with is its business. Unless one is beside oneself, one cannot cite CDE Chivhayo’s deal with Starlink – whatever it is or amounts to – as evidence that he is being favoured in the award and issuance of Government tenders.

Mixed Reactions as ED Approves Chivayo’s Starlink Deal

“There is no Government in Starlink; there is no Govt tender either! His Excellency the President merely announced the Government’s authorization of the service after positive recommendations from a Cabinet Committee set up to advise the Government on the prudence or otherwise of allowing the satellite service in the country.”
